What is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is the result of breeding a beautiful and calm tempered Bernese Mountain Dog to a quick-witted and non-shedding Poodle.

Bernese Mountain Dogs, or Berners, emerged from the Swiss Alps as working dogs where they were harnessed to pull carts, herd livestock, and watch over the family farm. They have iconic markings in tricolor form, and they are intensely loyal, intelligent, and social. If you have ever encountered a Berner, you may be familiar with Berner lean, where they lovingly rest their body weight on the side of your leg. Read more about the history of the Bernese Mountain Dog at the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Bernese Mountain Dog

Unfortunately, the average lifespan of a Bernese Mountain Dog is just seven years and many battle with hip and elbow dysplasia, cancer and heart disease. See how we combat this here.

They also are high shedding. We place a lot of Bernedoodles with families who are former Bernese Mountain Dogs owners, desiring the temperament and beauty of their markings coupled with a longer lifespan, fewer health problems, and little to no shedding.

Bernedoodles are rapidly gaining in popularity because of their sunny dispositions, social nature, and excellent aptitudes. They are phenomenal family dogs and therapy dogs. Although the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize them as an actual pure breed, the demand for Bernedoodles is quickly surpassing traditional dogs.

Talking 'bout my generation!

Bernedoodles that we raise can be broken down into the following
generations or crossbreeds:

  • First Generations, abbreviated to F1, are half purebred AKC Bernese Mountain Dog and half purebred AKC poodle.Shedding for this generation is 1/3 of the litter low shedding.

  • An F1b is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and a purebred AKC poodle. The result is a quarter Bernese and 75% poodle making them the most allergy friendly. Non shedding

  • A Teddy Bear Bernedoodle is breeding a Bernedoodle to a Bernedoodle. Another term, multigeneration Bernedoodle.Non shedding

  • Australian Bernedoodle Multigeneration is Australian labradoodle and Bernedoodle. Non shedding

  • Australian Bernedoodles are half purebred AKC Bernese Mountain Dog and half Australian Labradoodles Shedding 1/3 of the litter low shedding

Shapes and Sizes

Rocky mtn bernedoodles breeds three size's in bernedoodles. The standard size is small standard, if you are wanting a very large bernedoodle we are not the breeder for you.
We breed micro mini 10-25, Mini 30-50 and some small standard 55-70 approximately.. We focus on the mini size and do a large percentage in that size.  Size is always an estimate. We try to be as accurate as possible.

In recent years, genetic testing for the alleles of some genes has become available making color patterns easier to predict. We expect this aspect of breeding to develop in the coming future!
